The design of this book and the six relief prints from wooden type, all by artist and printer Peter Koch, reflect the theme of the book’s eight poems by former American Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin. Merwin writes about darkness, night, and invisibility, not morosely but as a source of dreamlike restfulness. The endpapers and other openings are illustrated with antique star maps.

The book is an edition of fifty printed on vintage Carta di Amalfi and bound at the press with cotton rag St. Amand. It is signed by the poet and the artist.
