Known for his elaborately printed fine press books and artist’s books, Russell Maret (b. 1971) is a type designer and printer who lives and works in New York City. Maret began printing in San Francisco in 1989, then began an apprenticeship with Peter Koch in Berkeley, and subsequently moved on to the Firefly Press in Somerville, Massachusetts. In 1993, he established his own press, initially working out of the Center for Book Arts in New York City.
Maret’s sophisticated books reflect his lengthy in-depth study of the history of letterforms and type design. His books often feature typefaces he has designed with a particular eye to communicating the ideas of a specific text. Usually designing fonts digitally and printing from photo-polymer plates, Maret has also produced two metal typefaces.
Maret’s works are noted for the luminous and painterly images he achieves through a demanding process of layered printing. His virtuosity with the black art of printing is well known among both practitioners and collectors, and it has earned him numerous invitations as a speaker and a master class instructor. Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, has called Maret “a printer who now owns his craft.” In 2013, the Library began the process of acquirinig Maret’s archive of type and book design.
In his various capacities as an artist, author, and printer, Maret has created over 40 editioned and unique books and manuscripts. He has served as printer in residence at the Press in Tuscany Alley in San Francisco and Artist in Residence at the Center for Book Arts in New York. His works can be found in important private and public collections both domestically and abroad.
