Peter Doig (b. 1959) is a painter known for works that combine figuration and abstraction. Doig studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, the St. Martin’s School of Art, and the Chelsea School of Art, developing a unique approach to painting that he has used to explore a range of subjects, typically landscapes, in unusual ways. He works from photographs, film stills, and images from newspapers and magazines. He frequently paints in an acid color scheme in a loose style that has led some to compare his work to that of Post-Impressionist painters like Pierre Bonnard, and his choice of colors is reminiscent of the Fauves.
Born in Scotland, Doig grew up in Canada, Trinidad, and London. His experiences in these places inspired his landscape paintings which are some of his best-known works. Exploring the theme of man’s relationship with his environment, Doig depicts both urban and rural scenes as well as leisure activities such as fishing and snow sports. Many of Doig’s works evoke the Romantic landscape painting tradition but they are also noted for their abstract surface qualities.
In addition to working in the medium of painting, Doig has engaged with printmaking for many years, using various etching processes to achieve painterly effects. His graphic works include Blizzard ’77 (1997), a portfolio featuring depictions of snow scenes and skiers, and Bugs: A Portfolio (2000), a collaborative project to which he contributed an etching. He has also contributed to a handful of book projects. One example is This Purile Thing (1996), a book of photocopied poetry cheaply bound and illustrated with works by Doig, Billy Childish, Matthew Higgs, and others. In 2007, Doig worked with publisher Salon Verlag to release a special edition of the 1932 book The Wonders of Ski-ing featuring his artwork.
Doig was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994. His works are held in many institutions around the world including the Tate Gallery, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago among others. Doig currently teaches painting at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Germany.
