Artist and poet Walter Hamady founded the Perishable Press Limited on his farm in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, in 1964. The name came from his own view of human life: perishable and limited. The work of the press is characterized by the use of Hamady’s own handmade paper, featuring a rough texture and a variety of colors, and by complex binding structures and noteworthy colophons. Since 1966 he has taught book arts at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
