Born in San Sebastián, Spain, Eduardo Chillida (1924 – 2002) studied architecture at the University of Madrid and went on to achive international fame for his sculptural works. After moving to Paris early in his career, Chillida made works in stone and plaster that used figurative and landscape imagery. Chillida returned to Spain in 1951, settled in the Basque region, and began to work in iron, wood, steel, and stone – materials connected with the landscape and industries of Spain’s Basque country. Through these materials, Chillida explored conceptual and metaphysical themes, creating abstract geometric sculptures that emphasized a sense of balance, rhythm, and simplicity. Through his choice of materials and through the scale and relationship of his forms, he explored a definition and transformation of light and space that reflected the influence of his architectural background.

Although Chillida was known primarily for his sculptural works he also created graphic works throughout his career. Notably, he was a frequent contributor to Derrière le Miroir, the French art periodical published by Maeght Éditeur. His original lithographs, woodcuts, and etchings also illustrated a number of noteworthy books including Le Chemin des Devins (1966) by André Frénaud, with ten etchings and aquatints, and Mas Alla (1973) by Jorge Guillén, with sixteen woodcuts. Other notable books featuring art by Chillida include Le Sujet est la Clairière de sons Corps (1975), Adoración (1977), and Funeral Mal I (1977).

Over the course of his career, Chillida received numerous awards in recognition of his work. These include the Grand International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale (1958), the Carnegie Prize for Sculpture (1964), the Grand Award for Arts in France (1984), and many more. His work has been the subject of retrospectives at many museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1966), the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1979), and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999). His works can be found in institutions and public spaces internationally.
