This book was the member’s publication of the fifth Marquess of Salisbury, Robert Arthur James Gascoyne-Cecil, the twentieth century descendant of the collector of this material, William Cecil, who was the first Lord Burghley and Lord High Treasurer to Elizabeth I. It is the 235th publication of the Roxburghe Club, England’s oldest surviving bibliophilic organization, and contains twenty-four plates, six in color, of printed maps, manuscript maps, and drawings in various categories: maps relevant to the domestic affairs of state, maps relevant to foreign affairs, maritime maps, maps relevant to the Cecil family estate, and architecture.

This copy was owned by Frank S. Streeter, investor, philanthropist, and renowned collector of books relating to sea voyages during the age of exploration. He was the son of Thomas F. Streeter, the well-known Americana collector whose auction catalogue from Park-Bernet Galleries has become a critical bibliographical reference work.

This edition is quarter bound in morocco and has deckled edges. This copy includes the discrete celestial-navigation themed bookplate (compass, astrolabe, and stars) of Mr. Streeter on the front pastedown.
